Rhody 5K Race Report (Men’s)
CSU Rhody 5K Race Report (mainly Men’s)
This report is a bit biased towards the Men’s race and older age groups as I’m writing it from that POV. I really enjoyed the dual race scenario that Rhody has as being able to watch the women’s race is a treat, especially as a tight pack of four women went by at the 1.5 mile mark, something you don’t get to see in a mixed race.
In-depth women’s race report is left for someone else.
Helped greatly by our two-man Rhode Island contingent, CSU men’s teams scored
surprisingly well considering a less than full team at the shortest race in the GP series. The shortest and longest races in the GP seem to be hardest for CSU to get a full complement of runners.
I drove down as part of a four-man 50+ crew which left from Roslindale, arriving over an hour before the start at a very laid back starting area. Unlimited parking!
Number pickup took seconds even as a big crew of CSU’ers lined up in front of the 100-199 number pickup box.

The 60+ team was ably led by Sumner Brown as Gordon and Marshall missed this race. Hank Gediman raced in his home state and was not far behind, and Mark Stern finished up the scoring trio to keep CSU from falling out of 3rd position on the day.
It didn’t show in the on-site draft of team results, but GCS Triad found Brad Johnson missing in a later pass and that allowed them to move 2 seconds in front of NMC in the 60+ scoring.
That sets up a close 3-team race going into the final three events as GCST made up 2 points on CSU at this event.

The Men’s 50 team was led by Jon Waldron’s 2nd place time of 17:04. This is Jon’s
highest placing in the Grand Prix age groups in years, partially due to his relative
youth in the 50+ division. But he made a major breakthrough in beating a couple
of his long-time nemeses, David Oliver and Reno Stirrat, not to mention Martin Tighe and
John Barbour. Only Craig Fram’s A-G equiv effort of 13:58 prevented him from taking the win.
Jon’s time pulled our 50+ team total way down and allowed us to slip by both GCS Triad (GCST) and
MVS by less than a minute. Those two relative points could prove critical at the end
of the series. I (Stephen) ran my first sub 20:00 non-aided 5K in seven years, and was followed
by three 55+ runners as we nailed down 4th place. Last year we finished 8th of 9 at the
same race so this is a great improvement. And we did it without the two regular 60+ scorers,
who normally run faster than our scoring team. This speaks to the great depth the team has built in the 50+ and 60+ groups. And a shout out to Michael McHugh who will join the 50+ team prior to our two September races. He’ll be hearing from me! (And then I’ll rejoin my place in the parentheses group in the GP team scoring.)

The Masters Team finished just behind the big five in their division. Consistency over all four
events has kept them in the mix. Only two points separate places 4-7 in the series, but
both BAA and GSH essentially DNF’d at the 12K so expect them to bounce back as we battle for 6th.
Terry McNatt led the Masters with his 16:24 to give us an edge up front and Al Paine and Kevin
Delaney ran strong to make sure we stayed in front of GCST.
The same Masters team scored 12th of 20 teams in the Open division. And on a personal note,
I accomplished a personal/team goal that I was never able to do in my 40’s, namely scoring
for the Open Team. Please don’t let that happen again!

Due to small numbers the teams scored lower but did generate team points in all three divisions. This has helped the 50+ team to maintain their 2nd place series standing.
